As I'm sure many of you know, I'm not a big fan of watching the news. However, last night it was on briefly, and I saw one of the most ridiculous
stories I've ever seen. In a city in Massachusetts (I believe Worcester), many of the firefighters decorate their helmets to show their support for things. Some
have dedications to the police and firemen that helped at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Some have dedications to the 6 firefighters who died
recently in Worcester. These helmets have been decorated in this way for some time, and no one has taken exception to it, until now. You see,
one man went too far. One man decorated his helmet with the American flag.
That's right, Old Glory is now considered offensive, and he has been asked to remove it. While other people have decorated their helmets
to show support of very specific groups of people, this man merely showed his support for the United States of America, which he defended
as a member of our armed forces. In the interview on the news station, he said how he always received compliments on his helmet from other
fire departments and that no one had ever complained to him. However, it is because of his specific helmet that the city has decided to
state that the helmets are property of the city and therefore not an appropriate place for self expression. None of the other firefighters
were asked to remove the alterations to their helmets.
I have little to say about this, except that it is fucking bullshit. Way to be proud of your country, bureaucratic douchebags. I think
it's fucking stupid, but I can understand how people can be offended by things like nativity scenes on government property. I think they're
whiny little pussies who need to grow up, but at least I can kinda understand where they're coming from. But when the American flag, the
fucking symbol of our country, is considered to be inappropriate? That's not even vaguely related to political correctness. If Americans
are offended or ashamed of the sight of their own flag then the terrorists are winning. That's right, I went there.
