Alright, so The Rock didn't actually say that to Obama, but it's time someone did. This nonsense with AIG was bad enough, but the new
situation at GM is even worse. For those who don't know, the headline read "CEO of GM Steps Down at Request of White House". While
I'm not saying that the CEO was doing a good job or that he didn't need to leave, it's not the president's job to remove him. I don't
mean that as in "the president has more important things to do", I mean that as in "the president has absolutely no right or authority
to make such a declaration". Last time I checked, America was a capitalist society, not some sort of facist police state. The president
does not have the right or the authority to fire private citizens. Ironically, it is actually private citizens who collectively have
the power to fire the president. Only the owners of GM, which would be the stockholders, have the power to remove the CEO (Although other
executive can strongly suggest that he step down). Is Obama saying that the government now owns and controls all formerly private
companies in the United States of America?
Some would argue that the president has this sort of power because GM received a shit ton of bailout money and are asking for more, but
that's not how this works. The bailout was a loan, not a buyout. If I take a loan from the bank for my business and then ask for another
loan, the bank doesn't first come into my business and start making changes to the company before deciding what to do, because they
don't fucking own it or work there.
I know that every president makes mistakes, but things are starting to get really out of hand. We're not even three months into this
term, and already Obama has made nearly $1 trillion (literally) of mistakes as well as severely overstepping the bounds of the office
of president. People joked about how the Patriot Act destroyed our personal liberties, but I think these are far more detrimental
to our personal liberties. The government stepping in to run companies in industries that I can't imagine they're actually experts in
and deciding to tax people 90% just because they feel like it is much worse than anything the Patriot Act did. You know, unless you
frequently made international phone calls to known terrorists. And if you did, then I think we all feel safer knowing that those calls
were monitored.
